The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
